High West Distillery – Featuring Rendezvous Rye Whiskey and Vodka 7000′

Early last year, when I first discovered that Park City was getting it’s own whiskey distillery, I almost passed out from excitement.  I couldn’t believe it, there was going to be a whiskey distillery less than a half mile from my house, within walking distance, biking distance, and just a few steps from the Town Lift! So I did what any normal whiskey addict would do, I went straight to the Utah State Liquor Store and immediately hunted down a bottle of what would soon become one of my favorite libations.

High West Rendezvous Rye WhiskeyI sped home, ran up my stairs, popped open the bottle, and poured myself two ounces of High West Rendezvous Rye Whiskey into a snifter. I made a quick swirl of the amber liquid in my glass, inhaled the spicy aroma of cinnamon and caramel, and then took my very first sip.  It was love, love at first taste.  Soft notes of vanilla, mint, and honey dangled on my tongue and the flavors of rye sat heavily on the back of my throat. I was delighted and more than happy that this new delicious whiskey was soon going to be distilled in my home-town.

Since it’s debut, High West’s Rendezvous Rye Whiskey has won awards and a 95 point rating, including becoming a Double Gold Winner at the San Francisco World Spirits Competition in 2008.  Their whiskey commemorates the  first recorded whiskey-fest out West, which is where the name “Rendezvous” stems from.  This annual summer exchange, from 1825-1840, consisted of mountain men gathering together to trade their goods and eventually supplying generous amounts of whiskey while meeting in the Utah Cache Valley. According to High West, it is in this tradition that the company imports whiskey from back East in order to craft the Rendezvous. For some more history and information on the High West Distillery, check out this video from PCTV.

The highly anticipated High West Distillery and Saloon will be located at 703 Park Ave, making it one of the only ski-in ski-out distilleries in the world.  According to the posted construction sign, High West’s Grand Opening is scheduled for July 4th, which is a perfect day for a Park City Saloon to debut.

High West also distills their own Vodka, appropriately named Vodka 7000′. If you can’t wait for the opening, make sure you stop by any Utah State Liquor Store and pick up a bottle, or for those out-of-state visit K & L Wine Merchants to order online. We had a group of 14 last night at the High West Distillery. The food was great but the service left a lot to be desired. We had reservations for the private dining room in advance and when we got there we were herded like cattle to the main room where we were cramped for space. Kevin our waiter acted as if it was a hassle to wait on us. He quickly gave us the specials and took our drink orders and we then waited 20 minutes to get the first round.

After we ordered he came around after he noticed our drinks were all empty and attempted to get the drinks replenished which was a feat in and of it self. When we finally got our meal, it came out two plates at a time over 15 minutes. The food was great and I recommend the bison but that is the nicest thing I can say about the joint.

Our bill came and they would not split the check. Kevin said I will bring you a paper and pen and you can figure it out. We asked what the tax rate was so we can all make sure we were going to be paying the right amount and Kevin’s response was “I don’t know I don’t live here. It took 45 minutes to get the the checks figured out and he was NO help what so ever! Kevin was not deserving of the 18% mandatory gratuity. Park City is all about service and my dinner party at the High West Distillery was given the service and respect of a bum who just asked for a dollar at a corner of a red light. Think twice about going to this restaurant.
