Ghidotti’s on Thursdays – $5 Is All You Need
What are you doing this Thursday night? If you’re not going to Ghidotti’s at the Junction you are missing out. For most of the summer and currently into the fall, Ghidotti’s has been offering a special $5 menu every Thursday night. This menu features appetizers, salads, entrees, dessert, wine and cocktails for only $5 each. Individual pizzas are also available for $8.
So what does a $5 entree at a fancy Italian restaurant taste like? Are the portions obscenely small? Does the $5 wine come out of a box? Read on to find out…
When Casey and I arrived at Ghidotti’s, the waiting area was filled with people, and there were a few more people waiting at the bar. I knew we should have made a reservation! We added our names to the list and were told the wait would be about 20 minutes. No more than 3 minutes later our name was called and we were led to our table. Nice! A good hostess knows that it’s all about exceeding expectations, and our dinner was already off to a good start.
Like the other special Bill White restaurant menus this summer, Ghidotti’s features a $5 menu with everything from appetizers to cocktails. After looking things over, we chose to start with the calamari, one of our favorite appetizers. Casey also ordered one of their $5 signature cocktails, which was a refreshing blend of gin, vodka, triple sec, with muddled basil and some fresh berries. We also placed our entree order after some questions for the waiter.
Our appetizer and drink arrived very quickly, and we dug right in. The calamari portion was generous for the price, but it didn’t live up to other calamari appetizers we’ve had around town (or at other Bill White restaurants for that matter). The pieces were a little more chewy than usual, and the two dipping sauces didn’t excite either of us. We ate the entire appetizer, but it wasn’t anything spectacular…about what you would expect for $5. To be fair, the waiter did offer us the full-priced, real deal calamari appetizer, but we passed. This is about experiencing $5 Thursdays after all.
As we were nearing the end of our appetizer, we were presented with a basket of fresh baked bread; just in time for our entrees. When our main courses arrived, we were both immediately suprised by the size of our meals. The $5 portions much larger than we expected and my worries of going home hungry immediately vanished. Casey had ordered a vegetarian penne pasta dish with mushrooms, onions and spinach in a red sauce. I went with the chicken parmesean, which was breaded and served on a bed of bowtie pasta.
So how did they taste? Again, we weren’t blown away, but we both felt extremely satisfied for what we spent (seems to be the theme of the night). My marinara sauce was a little bland, but we were getting these meals for less money than we could make them at home, so who’s to complain?
These days everyone is trying to save money, so why not take some friends out to dinner this Thursday for less than the price of a movie ticket? The atmosphere is one of the best in Park City, the service is top-notch, and you will leave with a full stomach. What’s not to love?
